About

the project, where it comes from and where it's going

That part needs a bit more work in terms of wording and language.

But here are just a few things for now:

Moris so realite can be translated from Mauritian Kreol as 'the real Mauritius' or 'the other face of Mauritius'. The origin of the project's name lies in the fact that in all the years I have travelled to the island, I have felt a strong dissonance between the usual narratives about Mauritius and the reality I experienced.

I have been a photojournalist for over 30 years (yes, I started with 35mm film cameras). I first came to Mauritius in 2012 and have been back almost every year since. The first things I saw in Mauritius were not the beautiful hotels and beaches, but the people and houses in Mangalkhan in Floreal.

So that's where the project comes from.

So where is it going? In a nutshell. I want to offer a perspective that allows others to question the current narratives about Mauritius. It's not just hotels, beaches and palm trees, it's so much more. I also want to remain humble and respectful. I'm not a Mauritian, I'm an immigrant. That is always at the back of my mind.
